Structured designs and responsibly sourced leather define the handbags from Hydes Studio.
Offering elegant and minimalistic designs in leather handbags and small accessories, Ramya Hari Madhavan (27) says, “I always keep an eye out for different patterns. I see structure in everything, right from buildings to people and places.” Started by husband-wife team of Hari Madhavan (32) and Ramya in June last year, Hari’s passion for fashion and Erode-native Ramya’s entrepreneurial flair resulted in the inception of the city-based label, Hydes Studio.
Known for their stark aesthetics, Ramya tells us that they love leather for its durability and texture. “We do, however, ensure that the leather we use is responsibly sourced and all our suppliers have BLC-certification. This is to ensure that the effluents from the tanning are sent through a ‘reverse osmosis’ process and the output is used for agriculture,” explains the MBA graduate from Alliance Business School, Bengaluru. While one cannot expect any vegan options from the brand, Ramya does tell us, “We believe that leather is bio-degradable unlike faux-leather products. With use, our handbags get a beautiful patina which doesn’t happen with any other material or fabric.” Among her new designs that have our attention is the recently-launched camera tote (`6,700) designed in collaboration with Bengaluru-based fashion photographer, Manvi Gandotra, that is handy yet spacious and chic.More to see
The designing duo has been actively showcasing their brand at various exhibitions across the country, including the Maker’s Market in Chennai and Soul Sante and Fuzone in Bengaluru, besides retailing on social media (over 5,000 followers on Instagram and 2,000 on Facebook). Shoppers can expect a limited but timeless array of totes, bucket bags, sling bags and wallets for both men and women. We recommend the striking red bucket bag, the two-tone everyday tote in black with a yellow bottom, and their best-selling oversize day bag in tan. Both Hari (with a fashion design degree from Istituto Marangoni, Italy) and Ramya oversee the impeccable craftsmanship. “Our designs reflect traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics. Every Hydes Studio bag is hand-cut and crafted flawlessly with an eye for detail. Every bag is unique as we work on made-to-order concept,” she elaborates. With plans of stocking at selected boutiques abroad, they also intend to take the brand across the country.
