Mamagoto’s taco festival puts an Asian twist on the Mexican favourite
Known for its award winning Pan Asian menu and quirky Manga-themed decor, Mamagoto holds a special place in the city’s culinary landscape. Getting creative with their offerings, the restaurant has recently introduced a range of soft shell tacos with an Asian twist. The ‘TAH-KOH’ menu features a mix of pork, duck, chicken and seafood, apart from a few vegetarian treats. Boasting bold and contemporary flavours, on offer are Smoky (chicken), Mooey (lamb), Prawny (shrimp), Craby (crab) and Ducky (duck). The vegetarians can choose from the Toufish (tofu) and cheesy tacos. “The smoked chicken, crab, shrimp and cheesy tacos are among the most fast moving,” says manager, Saket Kumar.
Start with chicken — smoky and flavoured with finely chopped tomatoes and onions, layered with goats cheese, and topped with homemade Asian taco sauce. We loved the subtle flavours and the sauce, which enhanced the dish without overpowering the meat. On the other hand, Ducky is perfect for people who are open to strong and bold flavours. Crispy duck shreds, layered with cucumber, topped with plum sauce and garnished with spring onions, give your senses a pungent and sweet experience, which could be overwhelming for those who are not used to it.
The Prawny, which proved to be our favourite, has the right balance of textures and flavours. The chilli mayo topping nicely complements the crispy fried shrimp and freshly sliced cucumber, with the right mix of freshness and heat. A must-try for seafood lovers! An interesting choice for the vegetarians would be Toufish, featuring crispy tofu in a soft shell taco. The tofu is topped with green chilli mayo, taco sauce, BBQ sauce and garnished with peanuts, giving it a Thai touch.
The best accompaniment to the spread is the Blueberry Cooler, which left us energised despite the sultry summer heat.
