French jazz trio, EYM, on their city debut and their sound.
Jazz aficionados, listen up. France-based EYM trio will be performing in the city this Tuesday.A� a�?In France, a lot of people have told us about Chennai, describing it as the cultural capital of India,a�? says Elie Dufour, who plays the piano, and is excited about the banda��s city debut. Started six years ago, the trio has done more than 150 concerts in Europe in the last four years and believes that they have come a long way in terms of their sound.They have been inspired by legends of the genre such as Duke Ellington, Chick Correa and Michel Petrucciani, and contemporary musicians/bands like AvishaA? Cohen, EST and Joshua Redman. a�?But we have developed our own personal way of playing,a�? clarifies Dufour. Talking about how they have improvised, he says, a�?We play jazz mixed with a lot of influences from the Balkan countries.a�? You can look forward to songs like Grand-pas, which Dufour wrote for his grandfather and he claims a�?everybody falls in love witha�? and Break Astral, in which the members have experimented with voices. Dufour also adds the possibility of some Indian songs. a�?We arranged for a fusion project with kathak dancers and musicians in Ahmedabad,a�? he signs off.
