French jazz trio, EYM, on their city debut and their sound.
Jazz aficionados, listen up. France-based EYM trio will be performing in the city this Tuesday. “In France, a lot of people have told us about Chennai, describing it as the cultural capital of India,” says Elie Dufour, who plays the piano, and is excited about the band’s city debut. Started six years ago, the trio has done more than 150 concerts in Europe in the last four years and believes that they have come a long way in terms of their sound. They have been inspired by legends of the genre such as Duke Ellington, Chick Correa and Michel Petrucciani, and contemporary musicians/bands like Avishaï Cohen, EST and Joshua Redman. “But we have developed our own personal way of playing,” clarifies Dufour. Talking about how they have improvised, he says, “We play jazz mixed with a lot of influences from the Balkan countries.” You can look forward to songs like Grand-pas, which Dufour wrote for his grandfather and he claims “everybody falls in love with” and Break Astral, in which the members have experimented with voices. Dufour also adds the possibility of some Indian songs. “We arranged for a fusion project with kathak dancers and musicians in Ahmedabad,” he signs off.
July 19, at Alliance Française, from 7 pm. Details: eventjini.com
