Hanut Singh showcases chandelier earrings inspired by church lights at Evoluzione
INSPIRED by his royal lineage, Hanut Singh’s jewellery collection, Circa Now, is an interesting mix of influences. The New Delhi-based designer, who is the great-grandson of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of the erstwhile kingdom of Kapurthala, is launching his latest line at Evoluzione this week. With fine detailing and a distinctive colour palette, he says, “My collection is based on architecture and nature, the two things that inspire me. I would say it is a modern throwback to elegant, linear jewellery.” Singh, who grew up surrounded by beautiful ornaments—thanks to his family owning creations from world-renowned brands like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels—admits he has no formal training in design. “I learnt about proportion, stones, cuts and colours because of my family,” he says, adding that he prefers not to make heavy pieces as his collection is worn for all occasions—be it party, work or a holiday.
Known for his fascination with stones, his collection features opals, pink sapphires, emeralds, diamonds and natural pearls. From his chandelier earrings (inspired by lights in the churches in Prague and Budapest) to the dagger earrings (inspired by his grandfather’s kirpan), Singh gets his ideas from everywhere. “I also love looking at the moon as it fires my imagination. I find stones in colours that are luminous, like moonlight,” says Singh, who will be present at Evoluzione. From celebrities like Beyonce, Sophia Bush and Rihanna to the Queen of Jordan, Singh’s exclusive jewellery has been worn by many celebs. So what’s next? After Chennai, he is off to New York and Beverly Hills, to host several shows. “This is a collection that keeps evolving and I keep adding new creations,” he concludes.
