If you are among the countless Indians who are fixated on when Sachin Tendulkar or Mahendra Singh Dhoni take to the crease, National Geographic Channel’s latest, Nat Geo Inside IPL, is right up your pitch. The six-part documentary series on the Indian Premier League takes you behind the scenes of what is the most popular cricket league in the world. “Though the focus is on 2013’s sixth season, the show reveals a more generic view of what makes this league tick. Leading international cricket stars, senior IPL management, celebrity team owners, an international commentator who has seen world sports close up and top cricket experts share insights in exclusive interviews,” says Debarpita Banerjee, VP marketing, National Geographic and FOX International Channels.
Filmed over six months and created from over 1,000 plus hours of footage, with a bulk of the shoot having taken place during the IPL 2013 tournament, Banerjee says the series is based on various themes. For instance, the Match day Mayhem episode takes a look at three of the 12 venues where matches were played in 2013. “The massive scale of production is spotlighted in this episode,” she adds. And those who pride themselves on knowing it all when it comes to the IPL, think again, for this show is packed with little known facts and figures — “from square foot area of stadiums to why sponsors spend on the IPL,” Banerjee assures us there is more.
