Actor Yashpal Shamra on his role in Neeli Chattri Wale and the genres he prefers
Having essayed several negative and grey roles on the big screen,Yashpal Sharma will now be seen playing a harried
Bhagwan Das, in a new show, Neeli Chattri Wale, on Zee TV. “I am taunted either by my father or wife or children. I am this kind-hearted person but no one realises that. I do not believe in God but I visit temples and recite prayers to keep my family happy. I have an encounter with God and then things change,” says the actor, 47, who was noticed for his roles in movies like Lagaan, Gangaajal, Ab Tak Chhappan and Rowdy Rathore.
Relating to the character in real life, he says, “I am like Das. I believe there is a superior power but I don’t go to temples and pray all the time.” Movie vs television Inspired by the movie, OMG—Oh My God, this light-hearted serial will be Sharma’s third outing in
television, after Mera Naam Karegi Roshan (Zee TV) and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (Sab TV). “I had got several offers from different channels but never took up any projects because then I would not be able to do any films,” says the actor. So, what made him take up Neeli Chattri Wale? “Ashwni Dhir, who will be directing, started reciting the script. We hadn’t even reached the second episode and I agreed to to play the role because I could relate to it so well,” he says. Now that the actor has signed up for the serial, he will not be taking upmovies for the next six months.
As for Sharma’s favourite genres,the actor likes realistic drama, “be it a thriller, comedy or tragedy. Ask him about his earliest television memory and he picks Chitrahaar on Doordarshan. “I used to watch the films they played every Sunday in a neighbour’s house,” he says. Neeli Chattri Wale premiers on Zee television on August 30,from 8 pm onwards.
