Making a mark
A handful of small budget films is set to hit theatres today, the first Friday of the year. One of them is Vishayam Veliye Theriyakoodadhu, helmed by Raghavendraawho has scripted, directed and composed the music, too. Senrayan, who provided the laughs in films like Moodar Koodam, dons one of the leads, along with Kuberan, Aryan and Ranjan. The film centres on a group of friends who take the fast lane of crime and conning people to make a quick buck.
Gearing up for a Pongal release is the family entertainer Komban. Starring Karthi, Lakshmi Menon and Rajkiran, the film centres on the relationship between a son-in-law and his father-in-law. a?It is an emotion that has not been explored in Tamil films,a? says Karthi, who is essaying a rustic ruffian. Itas set in Ramnad a?which brings its own unique ambience and flavour,a? adds the actor. The film is directed by Muthiah (of Kuttiipuli fame).
2014 witnessed 215 Tamil film releases (figure courtesy Film News Anandan). A record of sorts for the Tamil film industry. But were they all profitable ventures? Ask Arulpathi, distributors association head, and he says, a?I canat really think of any big films that made much profit. Rather, itas the handful of smaller ones, like Goli Soda and Aranmanai, that brought in the money.a? Seems like quantity overshadowed quality in the year gone by.
