Contemporary directors rule the fifth edition of this popular online film festival
Director Ketan Mehta, a big fan of the French film industry, is one of the jury members of the online MyFrenchFilmFestival2015, along with directors Anurag Kashyap, Tigmanshu Dhulia and lyricist Swanand Kirkire. In its fifth edition, the fest will showcase feature and short films, 10 each, on a video-on-demand platform, HalfTicket.tv, for a month, from January 16. They are available free to Indian viewers, on connected devices and phones.
Mostly by new generation filmmakers, the films have been largely selected by director Michel Gondry. “Earlier editions of the festival travelled to China and South America, where it was a super hit. Not everyone can access film fests that take place in other countries,’’ says organiser and founder of HalfTicket.tv, Jagdish Rajpurohit.
While popular genres in French cinema include crime thrillers, comedy and romance, this festival has films like Hippocrate, a touching social drama, Plein Soleil, a classic crime thriller, Chasse au Godard d’Abbittibbi, a romantic drama, and short film Aissa, about an African immigrant. “We’re opening the festival with the gripping film Eastern Boys. From the list of short films—Quelqu’un d’extraordinaire is a must watch. So is The Christmas Log,” says Rajpurohit. Mehta, who has been influenced by French directors, says, “I am a big fan of directors like Claude Chabrol and Jean-Luc Godard. I grew up watching French films and some, between the 50s and 60s, were epic. They are one of the most vibrant film industries.”
