Perch looks at how technology has us wrapped around its little finger
In his upcoming play, theatre director Rajiv Krishnan brings to the forefront a topic that is most relevant to today’s world — the hits and misses of technology. Titled Monkey and the Mobile, the play is a compilation of five or six short stories that revolve around the lives of an old couple, whose relationship changes after receiving a mobile phone, an ‘etrovert’, a term coined by the theatre group to depict an introvert who spends time in the virtual world, and a migrant in a smart city, among others.
Krishnan, who is the artistic director of the Chennai-based theatre group Perch, tells us, “The focus is especially on smartphones, which is something we carry everywhere. It’s ironic that with so many capabilities, they connect us so well, and yet distance us from the people right next to us. We can choose to keep certain memories on these devices, and delete others. They are intertwined with our lives. We are always monkeying around with them,” he signs off.
