Co-stars for the film, The Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey both dropped over 40 pounds each. Leto, who starved himself for a month to look like a transgender woman with HIV, says that it was all due to the commitment for the role. “Your body goes through weird stages. Sometimes it’s hard to hold on to water. But for me, it’s not about the most weight I can lose, it’s more to represent the character,” he shares. McConaughey, playing real-life AIDS patient Ron Woodroof, took the slow-and-steady approach to shedding the pounds by following a strict diet and doing high-intensity cardio workouts.
Pile it on
Vanessa Hudgens is growing up and becoming a talent to reckon with. Her role in the recent The Frozen Ground was commendable and now she’s all set to play a troubled teen. Gimme Shelter, is about a pregnant teen, with a junkie mother who is forced to live on the streets. For the lead role of Apple, Hudgens has had to pile on about 10 pounds in order to look pregnant and fuller, chop off her long locks and add piercings. Hudgens says there are days when she does not recognize her reflection in the mirror, “The walk, the talk … it was a completely new person. I really did look like a boy,” she told People.
Downton to tinsel
Most of us know Dan Stevens as the round-faced, pleasantly plump Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey. And if his death in the show wasn’t shocking enough, then perhaps this svelte, almost unrecognisable avatar will be even more surprising. He won the Most Stylish Man at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards earlier this year, and jokes about his weight loss for the upcoming Summer in February. “I’ve lost about 30 pounds since New Year, which in British terms, is about two or three chins,” he teases, adding, “My wife thinks this is hilarious. She reminded me when we first met I wore jeans we could both fit into.”
He’s always been known for his razor-sharp looks and method acting, so continuing this passion and commitment, Jake Gyllenhaal shocked fans with his gaunt look recently. And while the 20 pound weight loss was for his role as a freelance crime reporter who stumbles upon the dangerous underworld of Los Angeles in the 2014 release Nightcrawler, his new look is still far from appealing. With protruding bones, sunken eyes and an over-all darker look, Gyllenhaal insists he wanted his character Lou to be ‘literally and figuratively hungry’.
Six-pack Star Lord
He looked yummy enough in his macho role in the 2012 hit, Zero DarkThirty but now Chris Pratt sports a six-pack for his role in Guardians of the Galaxy. The 34-year-old actor is set to star as superhero Star-Lord (Peter Quill) in the upcoming sci-fi film set for release next year. Showing off his new body on an Instagram photo, he jokes about having survived six months without beer. The caption reads, ‘Six months no beer. #GOTG Kinda douchey to post this but my brother made me.’ The star also made a physical transformation and got ripped to star in Zero Dark Thirty.
