He penned the lyrics of some of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema, be it the Girlfriend number from Boys, the songs from Pokiri, Sivaji, Engish Vinglish and the famous Ovvoru Pookalume from Autograph that got him the National award for best lyricist. Without any prior assisting or technical backing, PA Vijay has turned producer-director for his upcoming film Strawberry. “These days, ghost films have thrill, comedy and revenge as the basic components. Strawberry is the first in its genre in Tamil cinema with ghosts, terror and a strong emotion resulting from a social cause,” he says. The name has been taken from one of
the characters in the film, who turns out to have a major role in the end.
Set in Chennai, Pondicherry and northern belts of Ahmedabad the film sees actress Devayani, Mayil Samy and Avani Sami (who was part of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Calendar Girls) playing important characters, besides Vijay himself. ”Actor Siddharth and GV Prakash have sung for the film. I had strong technical backing like music director Taj Noor and a CG team who spent over seven months putting it all together (the film has over 35 minutes VFX),” informs the 40-year-old who had Murali Ramanarayanan from Sr Thendral Films ( who also distributed Baahubali) and actor- director Samuthirakani mentoring him through the film making process. “Being producer and director for your film is tricky. Going for shoot everyday was like going to war — between cost control and creative freedom,” he laughs. “I continue to write lyrics as they come easily to me. I am working on the dialogues and lyrics of upcoming film Rudramadevi too, but my next film which will also be a social thriller about a real life incident that happened a few months
back — will begin work soon,” he signs off.
