Couturier Tan Kuruvilla’s story is one that has been heard before. An engineer by training, she left her high paying corporate job behind to follow her passion and has never regretted her bold move. However, unlike most others who get into the business without a clear idea of their exact plans, Tan has always been sure of what she wanted to do. “When I was getting married, I realised that there is a huge need for bespoke saris for Christian weddings. That’s when I knew that this was something I could pursue,” says Tan.
Launched barely a month ago, the Kavani studio by Tan, is located on one of the bylanes off the busy Infantry Road. This is her second outlet, after the one in her hometown, Kottayam. The community’s wedding colour scheme, which ranges from off white and ivory to gold and stark white, are the shades Tan prefers to work with. But for brides who have a yen for something more vibrant, she’s open to experimenting.
The spacious studio-cum-store has on display a striking selection of lehengas, including one made from white lace, which is almost like a traditional Christian gown. Another wall is taken up by the most delicate fabric swatches in cream, rose gold, white and ivory, featuring zardozi work, French knots and more. On the opposite side are the prettiest of net, tussar, silk, georgette and Kota silk fabrics. These, bearing delicate pearls, pita work, lace detailing and intricate cut work, are turned into saris depending on her client’s specifications.
