Debuting next month, singer Hariharan’s son, Karan, is going to show you his acting chops.
Being renowned singer Padma Shri Hariharan’s son and not choosing a career in music is definitely going to raise a few eyebrows. All set to debut in Bollywood with the film, Missing On A Weekend, Karan Hariharan is unfazed as he explains why he chose acting. “Somewhere along the line, I realised that when I am acting, it is a lot more personal to me,” he says. The 23-year-old concedes that being compared to his famous dad means a lot of pressure. But he loves music. “Music is an integral part of life. I play the piano and guitar, and I do sing. I used to do shows with dad when I was a kid,” he shares.
“I was in 11th standard when I watched Heath Ledger as Joker in The Dark Knight, and I came out of the theatre and thought that this is what I want to do,” says Karan who studied acting at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Los Angeles. “I used to weigh 100 kilos and when I met Abhishek (Jawkar) and told him I am interested in acting, he gave me this polite nod,” recalls Karan, who was back in Mumbai by 2012, having shed his extra weight and raring to get a film role. “Abhishek called me to his office last year. I reached the office not expecting anything, and realised my audition had been set up,” says the actor excitedly, admitting that getting into Bollywood is difficult regardless of an impressive background.
Missing On a Weekend is a murder mystery set in Goa where Karan plays the role of Laksh, who works at a call centre. An investigative drama, the film has actor Pavan Malhotra playing a top cop. Jawkar, who is also debuting as a director, says, “The movie portrays the dark side of Goa. It is a different, interesting and challenging film.” Karan is happy with his choice. A fan of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, he admires Vishal Bhardwaj’s Maqbool and hopes to work with the director someday. For his next project, he is inclining towards an action film and also hopes to team up with his father and brother for a project. Not revealing the details, he only says, “I would like to surprise people.”
Movie is scheduled to release on June 24.
