The coast got most of the attention this week with the latest edition of the Covelong Point Surf and Music festival. Drawing a crowd of over 8,000 people, the three day long fest showed off our beaches, along with a variety of local talent. Milind Soman inaugurated the event with a 30 kilometer run into Covelong village, giving way to one of the highlights, the surf competition. We were witness to some serious skills with participants from all over the world.
Not to mention the Jhonty Rhodes fan club who were there to catch a glimpse of the famous cricketer. Quite a few people also took advantage of the opportunity to take a few basic surf lessons. For the not-so-brave, some yoga, a light snack and lots of music. The lineup included Kutle Khan, Tritonik, Begum X and the grand finale, The Raghu Dixit Project. It was great to see them work their magic on the crowd. The beach was packed with locals, expats and the Chennai ‘party peeps’, all singing along in Kannada.
Celebrating her birthday this week was social butterfly Vimmi Deepak, whose annual bashes are looked forward to every year, by all the ladies. As usual it was ‘girls only’, and this year a Grecian themed do at the Flying Elephant. Everyone dressed in white and gold, with the birthday girl looking stunning in a floor length gown with a dramatic train. The theme continued into the food with souvlaki, gyros and a feast of other Greek delights. There was of course no shortage of picture taking, while the dance floor stayed packed throughout. Our hostess sure knows how to throw a party; everyone will probably need a few days to recover from this one. As the Greeks would say, and we did…‘Opa!’
On the same day, The Park hosted the launch of The Bangala Table by Sumeet Nair and Meenakshi Meyyappan with Jill Donenfeld, with a specially tailored evening. The launch was short and crisp allowing for guests to sample snacks from the book itself, along with a few of chef Rajesh’s signature treats.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Bachchan fans with an invitation to the Omega Speedmaster event at The Leela Palace, were in luck as the actor was in the mood to pose for as many selfies as the crowd required. Wearing a three-piece suit with customary flair, Bachchan showed off his own The Dark Side of the Moon watch, before catching up with Prabhu Deva, Kajal Agarwal and others.
