Four things you need to know about the new and improved Sidney Sladen
He is back after a two-year sabbatical. But when we ask Chennai designer Sidney Sladen if this is a a�?new and improveda�? version of himself, he laughs. a�?Ia��ve always been a firm believer in God. These past couple of years have been… eventful! But Ia��ve learnt a lot,a�? he says. The designer had faced business challenges and heartbreak, but is back with a glamorous new collection, a plush new store and a new lease on life.
a�?I spent time with my family and friends, travelled a bit and read a lot of Joyce Meyer, among other things,a�? says the 30-something, whoA� unveiled his collection, Breakaway, at a colourful fashion show at The Leela Palace last Saturday. He sourced polyforma (neoprene) from Italy especially for the line, which had Indian festive weara��from elaborate anarkalis and lehengas with neta��to chic capes, jumpsuits and long dresses. Sladena��s introspective journey translated well on stage a��108 outfits presented in a breathless 30 minutes, herea��s what you need to know:
Chic shop: a�?I am excited about my new store which will open on Sunday. It will truly be a reflection of me.a�? The 900 sq ft spacea��done up in white, silver, black and golda��will offer pret (ready-to-wear) for women in both western and Indian silhouettes.
Palette pointer: a�?Salmon pink,a�? declares Sladen, adding that it is his favourite hue for the upcoming season. a�?But Chennaiites are such colourful people that you can never do a collection with just a few colours,a�? he adds.
Fabric sense: Look for fabrics ranging from sleek polyforma to sexy silks, georgettes and chiffons.
Shape wise: a�?Confidence is key,a�? believes Sladen, who is a great advocate of curvy women. a�?I really think women ought to look like women,a�? he says, adding, a�?But I love designing for all body shapes and personalities.a�?
