Four things you need to know about the new and improved Sidney Sladen
He is back after a two-year sabbatical. But when we ask Chennai designer Sidney Sladen if this is a “new and improved” version of himself, he laughs. “I’ve always been a firm believer in God. These past couple of years have been… eventful! But I’ve learnt a lot,” he says. The designer had faced business challenges and heartbreak, but is back with a glamorous new collection, a plush new store and a new lease on life.
“I spent time with my family and friends, travelled a bit and read a lot of Joyce Meyer, among other things,” says the 30-something, who unveiled his collection, Breakaway, at a colourful fashion show at The Leela Palace last Saturday. He sourced polyforma (neoprene) from Italy especially for the line, which had Indian festive wear—from elaborate anarkalis and lehengas with net—to chic capes, jumpsuits and long dresses. Sladen’s introspective journey translated well on stage —108 outfits presented in a breathless 30 minutes, here’s what you need to know:
Chic shop: “I am excited about my new store which will open on Sunday. It will truly be a reflection of me.” The 900 sq ft space—done up in white, silver, black and gold—will offer pret (ready-to-wear) for women in both western and Indian silhouettes.
Palette pointer: “Salmon pink,” declares Sladen, adding that it is his favourite hue for the upcoming season. “But Chennaiites are such colourful people that you can never do a collection with just a few colours,” he adds.
Fabric sense: Look for fabrics ranging from sleek polyforma to sexy silks, georgettes and chiffons.
Shape wise: “Confidence is key,” believes Sladen, who is a great advocate of curvy women. “I really think women ought to look like women,” he says, adding, “But I love designing for all body shapes and personalities.”
