The new pub specials at this Irish watering hole are worth a try
WE decided to revisit Blimey and check out their new menu since we rather enjoy the spacious, contemporary interiors and large open air terrace with a sweeping city view. Cocktails here come highly recommended so we decided to go with a selection of martinis and a sampling of Jameson whiskey.
A large platter of mixed appetisers started us off nicely a mushroom romesco tarts and chicken and green apple salad a clearly one of my favourites with the tart pommeary mustard dressing complementing the chicken and apple. Chicken harrisa skewers of Middle Eastern origin had a good mix of subtle flavorsA while the chicken popsicle with peri peri sauce was too hot for me to handle. The fried calamari was tender and went well with the tartar sauce while the Irish boxty stayed true to its original with broccoli nestled between thin potato pancakes and covered in a creamy cheese sauce a great for a cold and rainy night.
For the mains, I sampled a classic Irish stew with tender lamb chunks in a rich brown gravy that was full of flavour. Slow cooked chicken piri piri was also tender and went well with the potato gratin. It wouldnat be Irish if you didnat have corned beef and cabbage, while another good choice was the green onion mashed potatoes.
Among the desserts that we tried, the one that stands out the most was the classic bread pudding. Moist and light with little raisins, it had just the right amount of sweet. A good choice for chocolate lovers would be the chocolate Marquise, a dark rich chocolate cake layered with chocolate icing.
