Shwetha Lakshmanan on her new leather brand and how it all began
FOR those with a bag fetish, Chennai girl Shwetha Lakshmanan’s collection of colourful leather options deserves a look. At her five-day-old store, Stitch & Turn, expect custom made bags, wallets, sling bags, backpacks and clutches. “When I turned 18, my mum bought me my first branded (Hidesign) red leather wallet. It was beautiful and since then I have been interested in leather accessories,” says the 23-year-old engineer by qualification. Learning the trade was not difficult as she interned at her father’sleather factory, which has been around since 1992. “My dad had taught me about the touch and feel of the skins, and how leather breathes. But when I shopped for leather bags in India, I realised the good quality ones are not affordable,” says Lakshmanan, who started her own factory in Pallavaram last year. Available in colours ranging from bright yellows and pinks to dark browns and blacks, she says, “All my products are made by skilled craftsmen and we mostly use sheep and cow leather. My designs include laser cuts, perforated designs, braided handles, rivets and buckles.” Inspired by Italian designs, the bags are crafted with precision German machinery. Lakshmanan also plans to have a monthly design competition where customers can submit their designs and, if they win, their designs will be showcased at the store. She will also launch her e-store in the next two months.
