One step up
Niyati Fatnani on her transition from a dancer to an actor with D4
STARTING Monday, you will see Niyati Fatnani in the role of Baby Sinha in Channel V’s new dance fiction show, D4. But acting was never in the scheme of things for this 21-year-old from Gujarat. She studied BBA, while pursuing Kathak. Dance has always been a passion! She moved to Mumbai to learn Western dance forms at choreographer Terence Lewis’ academy. Last year, a dance instructor told her about the D4 auditions. She gave it a shot, did a few contemporary and ballet moves, read out lines and was roped in as the lead.
“Acting is a completely new experience,” begins Fatnani, adding, “I wake up at 5 am, shoot, do dance rehearsals and sleep past midnight. It’s hectic, but fun. Dance rehearsals actually help me beat stress. As far as technicality of acting goes, facing the camera has been quite a learning. Since I am a Kathak dancer, I can emote well. I am sure I’ll grow better as an actor with time.”
Fatnani takes us through the plot. “Baby loves dancing, and idolises Mikhail Shah (played by actor/dancer Utkarsh Gupta), who runs a dance academy in Goa. She has learnt dance by watching Mikhail’s videos. During a college party, she dances on a song, exactly the way Mikhail had danced. Somebody records it, and uploads it on the net. He happens to watch the clip and takes it as an insult.”
Later, the two cross paths in Goa where Shah discovers a true dancer in Baby and decides to train her. A love track is inevitable amid a lot of contemporary, belly dance, hiphop, and jazz funk routines! We asked her how it was to work with Gupta, who’s quite a prankster, she says, “The minute he is off his angry character, he starts imitating me. That’s Utkarsh!”
