Bridal saris and cocktail dresses share space at The Dress Shop in Adyar
After turning heads at the recently-concluded exhibition, Style Centre, city-based designer Satkrit Krishna launched his first store, The Dress Shop, on Valentine’s Day. Moving away from his haute couture line Satkrit K (launched in 2010, featuring bridal wear in Kancheepuram silk), his store in Adyar showcases a pret collection. Expect anarkalis, lehengas, bridal wear, casual western wear and more. After graduating from NIFT, studied luxury brand management at Marongoni, Milan, where he worked with the collection division of Calvin Klein for over a year, before stints as a sales agent for brands like Nina Ricci and Vera Wang. Hailing from a family of silk weavers, the 32-year-old Krishna shares that he has always been close to fabrics, and offers in-house designs at his new store.
Offering a mix of different embroideries, including stone work on fabrics ranging from velvet and chiffon to jacquard and draped georgette and lace, the highlight of his collection lies in the intricacy of its hand embroidery and the flowy drapes. “We are basically looking at the contrast of very soft pastels with good neon — one of the trends that has been around for awhile,” Krishna shares. We also discover a range of bridal saris with statement blouses and simpler, elegant pre-draped saris, besides their collection of wedding gowns in voluminous umbrella cut styles and A-line options. Also look out for the party/cocktail dresses designed in collaboration with celebrity stylist Shruthi Sai from Kochi, that will be available at the store in Rs 1,000 onwards. Details: 24411285a month.
