The recent launch of Eddie’s Pop Corn by restaurateur M Mahadevan, and the Salted Caramel Popcorn tins (Rs 350 each) at Shitija Nahata’s The Cupcake Company, got us looking beyond theatres to seek out other ready-to-eat versions we may have missed on shelves. Besides a couple of brands like Red Indian (Nuts ‘n’ Spices) and Planet Popcorn (Gormei Market, planetpopindia.com), we found not much to write home about at the supermarkets. But a quick peek on Google led us to 4700 BC Popcorn, a two-year-old, New Delhi-based gourmet popcorn chain that took its offerings online last November.
Delivering across the country through FedEx, this brand offers 25 flavours of the sweet, savoury and outlandish kind too. “Our Magical Rainbow Potpourri has different fruit flavours. And our Nutty Tuxedo Choco-All-Ate has dark, milk and white chocolate over a caramel base. It is also topped with nuts,” says Chirag Gupta, co-founder of the brand. We also find flavours like Thai Golden Cheese and Jamaican Rum Choco-All-Ate on the website, with Gupta promising more interesting variants every quarter, like the red wine dark chocolate and BBQ cheese they are currently working on. Besides their own website, Gupta’s products are also available on Amazon, SnapDeal and stores like Foodhall and Le Marche. The brand is also looking at setting up physical stores in the South. “We have finalised a location in Hyderabad and are speaking to developers in Bengaluru and Mumbai,” says Gupta, whose products are packaged in attractive tins, bags and gift packs, and cost between Rs 65 and Rs 800 depending on the packaging. Back home in Chennai, an HR consultant turned entrepreneur, Vinodh Kumar is gearing up to launch an online ordering facility on zeapops.com, that will make his Zea Gourmet Popcorn available across the country, from July. “We started selling different flavours near our home in Madipakkam last July. We got plenty of orders for sports events and then set up a factory in Guindy this January,” says Kumar, who also has an outlet in Abirami Mega Mall and credits his wife for coming up with the idea to make gourmet popcorn. At their outlets you get fresh popcorn in flavours like Cheese, Creamy Onion, Candy Crush Caramel, Mirchi Up and Fruit Pop. “The savoury flavours have zero sugar and the fruit flavoured popcorn has a coating made from fruit pulp,” shares Kumar, who is also working on eco-friendly packaging, post which his products will be available at supermarkets (also by July). Of course, he intends to open more retail stores by the end of the year, with products like sticky popcorn added to his list. Currently available in three sizes at Rs 30, Rs 50 and Rs 100.
