Quizzing is addictive. When you take part in a quiz and are getting it right, your mind always asks for more. That’s the beauty of the format. On social media, quizzes are shared countless times and get a million views. Though sharing cannot be done on radio (unless it is streamed online), they still get a huge number of listeners. Unfortunately, quiz shows are a rarity on radio and non-existent in Chennai. Until now. The pioneers of Indian radio, All India Radio, kick-started Thamizhagathin Mastermind last Monday on 101.4 FM Rainbow and the phone lines are still ringing. To participate, register with your name and mobile number on firstname.lastname@example.org and you could be the next Mastermind of Chennai. I caught up with S Rama, the programming executive of All India Radio, to find out more.
Tell us about Thamizhagathin Mastermind?
It’s the brain child of our programming head, V Chakravarthy. He is a quiz master in his own right, having conducted many shows in Madurai. Thamizhagathin Mastermind is not an ordinary quiz show. The content is based on Tamil literature, the city of Chennai and its surroundings and, as the show progresses, it will get tougher. You will not get the answers even on Google!
Who is the quiz master?
Dr Sumanth C Raman is the quiz master. Besides being a doctor, he is a multi-faceted personality—he’s a sports commentator and political analyst, and is in the Limca Book of Records for hosting an infinite number of quiz shows. He has his own show on Doordarshan that has already crossed 700 episodes.
How has the response been?
Simply tremendous. We are confident the numbers will increase as we move forward.
If you are into quizzing, catch Thamizhagathin Mastermind every Monday at 9.05 am only on 101.4 FM Rainbow. See you next week.
