Sketch, in Nungambakkam has healthy salads, fresh fruit blends and for those without a diet plan, pizzas and popular desserts

Sketch. A catchy name we think, as we walk into the cafe located in Anugraha apartments, a stones throw away from the Taj Coromandel in Nungambakkam. While manager Ganesh Nagaratnam readies a table for us, we browse through the display counter and find ourselves wanting to tuck into dessert even before opening the menu. Single servings of cheesecake, panacotta, crem brulee, chocolate mousse and apple pie share the spotlight. And to the right, we find a shelf dedicated to breads (whole wheat, oats, Rs 40 per loaf) and cookies (butter, nuts, choco chip, Rs 85 for 250gms), that we later learn, all come from the central kitchen of the Apollo group of hospitals, who own the cafe.

On the menu, we are surprised to find a hand picked selection of salads, starters, pastas and pizzas in addition to cafe regulars like sandwiches and rolls. We order a chicken sausage pizza (all their pizzas are nine inch and thin crust) and Nagaratnam insists we try a mixed platter of starters as well. There’s prawns grilled in garlic and butter, sweetish poc-kets of filo pastry filled with spinach, paprika and feta, and dense cheese and corn balls too. The pizza arrives loaded with zucchini, bell peppers and slices of chicken sausage, doused with cheese. Though not wood fired, we find it quite competent.

In addition to the hot and cold beverages on offer, we like their ‘health drinks’ featuring combinations like golden fizz (papaya, orange and mint), basil punch (apple, soy milk and basil) and beauty fuel (tender coconut, mint and honey). Finally it’s time for dessert and after much thought we settle for a chocolate tart and tiramisu. Though the latter turns out a tad too tame, the tart with milk chocolate and rich caramel more than makes up for it. With their mix of quick mains and pizzas in addition to regular cafe fare, Sketch proves good choice to the slightly and the seriously hungry. Pizzas from Rs 250, desserts from Rs 80.
