Get a dose of the 80s with this Chennai-based outfit on Thursday

83 MPH is a treat if you enjoy rock music from the 80s. Since the band’s genesis in early 2011, they have won competitions like Channel V LaunchPad and have opened for acts like Swedish metal band, Vildhjarta and French-Canadian rock group, Simple Plan. They already have an EP out (83 Miles Per Hour) and hope to release an album soon. We catch up with drummer Peter Francis Joshua who tells us about their gig at Hard Rock Cafe.

The origins
We were into different genres of music (metal, punk and hip-hop) before starting the band. We picked out the first letter of each genre, M, P and H. We then added up our ages, which came to 83, to make it cooler and add spunk.

On getting together
All of us met at SAE Institute, Chennai while studying sound engineering. We had so many similarities in our musical tastes and writing styles, that we clicked almost instantly.

Opening for international acts
Playing for Simple Plan and Vildhjarta was a new experience altogether. Both the shows were super fun. We did not get to meet them but it was definitely a confidence booster.

Getting inspired
We take inspiration from bands like Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Karnivool, Aerosmith, Children Of Bodom among others on a list that is endless.

The gig list
The show will have songs from our self-titled EP. Also expect tunes like Hold On, Drunk, some new tracks we are working on, and covers too.

Big dreams
I would love to open for progressive legends Dream Theater.

Resurrecting artistes
Guitarist Dimebag Darrell of thrash metal band Pantera and drummer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. They were insanely talented and helped revolutionise heavy metal music.

Stress-busting
If we are not working you might catch us playing football and watching television shows like Game Of Thrones.

8pm. At St Marks Road. Tickets (Rs. 500 upwards) on bookmyshow.com
