Whitcomb and Shaftesbury’s Mahesh Ramakrishnan talks about bringing the made to order service to Chennai this weekend
Having completed over 40 years at Savile Row, master cutter John McCabe surely knows a thing or two about transforming male physiques and camouflaging the unsightly bits. All of this will come into play during his appointments with the city’s sartorialists at Evoluzione today and tomorrow. McCabe is part of Whitcomb & Shaftesbury’s elite team. As for the men behind the eight-year-old London bespoke brand, Mahesh and Suresh Ramakrishnan (two of a set of triplets), they are finally ready to take their business to other cities, and Chennai is the first stop.
With a bespoke suit taking 80 man hours and over a dozen measurements, Mahesh says their clientele, from Richard Gere to British and Middle East royals, appreciate the attention to detail. ‘‘Suresh and I wanted to do something in India, to make available what was only in London and America. It took us many years to find the right people to work with,’’ begins Mahesh, 40, who was earlier in the US. He recalls how they went through the usual Gucci, Armani and Brioni suits before heading to Savile Row.
‘‘It is considered distinct and perhaps intimidating as it is a generational tailoring business,” observes Mahesh. Today, Whitcomb & Shaftesbury specialise in suits, shirts, trousers, overcoats and pocket squares, together with bandhgalas and waistcoats. ‘‘Tuxedos are big during the festive season and cocktail jackets are back in demand, especially in damask and velvets, and in colours like cranberry and holly,’’ Mahesh concludes.

Prime cut – Measurements are in 3D and cover posture, body type, etc. Typically, a bespoke measurement takes about 45 minutes, and includes consultation of fabric and style. During stage two, a month later, McCabe makes an individual garment, a prototype that camouflages the tummy and so on. This is redrafted on strong cartridge paper and the garment is sculpted a month later. With Made to Measure, this weekend at Evoluzione, you can skip the preliminary stage, try a readymade suit, choose a style and fabric. Rs 70,000 upwards.
