Sabyasachi tells you how not to look like a cupcake on your big day
Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s list of celeb clients is as impressive as his stunning creations showcased in films like Guzaarish, Raavan and English Vinglish. Rani Mukerji to Aishwarya Rai, Rene Zelleweger to Reese Witherspoon, stars love his understated opulence. Ahead of the wedding season, he tells us about current trends, his design aesthetic and what makes the perfect bridal ensemble.
Current bridal trends.
Indian bridal aesthetics have evolved from girls wanting to look like cupcakes to schizophrenic maharanis to elegant princesses. Bridal wear with ostentatious bling does not work anymore but a balance between workmanship, silhouette and styling does. Indian brides are moving towards a cultural, organic zone and want a sense of place and history without looking like a piece of dressed up meat.
Top suggestions for the groom.
We have a dedicated menswear section at my new Mumbai store where a groom can easily be spoilt for choice. Understated clothing works best because the groom needs to step back a little just to complement his bride.
The ideal bride.
Dignity, culture and respect for tradition epitomise a Sabyasachi bride. A rich organic theme with hand blocked printed fabrics, flowers and an Indian meal makes for the ultimate Sabyasachi wedding in a minimalist fashion.
Your idea of beauty is…
Someone who is comfortable in their own skin. Clothes should be an extension of your intellect.
Ideal celebrity bride.
Madonna or Rekha. Their work is iconic.
The next best person to Freida Kahlo…
Would be Madonna!
