Karan Mehra on playing a pretentious detective and learning to laugh at himself
KARAN Mehra can go to any lengths to get into character. He recently put stones in his trousers and didn’t sleep for three days to get the right gait for his role in the upcoming film, Badmashiyan. “The dichotomy of performance is that sometimes actors push the envelope to get the look right and for some it’s the excitement of the end result that gives them sleepless nights. For me, both matter,” begins the actor who was last seen with Sunny Leone in Ragini MMS 2 and Mere Dad Ki Maruti. In the musical rom-com, Mehra plays detective Pinkesh. “He is a self-proclaimed Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Sherlock Holmes and is on the trail of a con girl, with whom he falls in love eventually,” says Mehra, who started out with the television industry. For the role of Pinkesh, he got help from his friend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who is also playing a detective in Dibakar Banerjee’s Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. “Sushant and I have been friends for several years. He plays Byomkesh and I play a pretentious one,” he smiles. Meanwhile, Mehra’s Amen (2011) has been selected by the University of Ohio as part of their syllabus. “As for genres and subjects, I’m only looking for good work with good people. So if someone thinks I fit into the bracket, call me,” he laughs. With his brand of self deprecating humour, the actor jokes that he is too perfect for improvement. But he does add, “Acting doesn’t have exams like medicine and engineering. You can keep learning and exploring.” For Mehra, family is everything. “My mom thinks I’m the best mix of all the three Khans, my wife is always worried that girls are hitting on me— unfortunately that never happens—and my sister is the one giving me reality checks,” he shares.
Badmashiyan is scheduled to release today.
