Head to Timri for handcrafted nosepins from Chennai-based Roia

An engineer by qualification, Rohita Vee turned to jewellery making during her college days as a hobby. “I was self taught and my products were a huge hit with everyone,” she shares. After her engineering course, she took off to London to study jewellery making and then Roia was born. A combination of letters from her name, the word translates to ‘a dream’ or ‘vision’ in Persian. “Roia is all about wearable luxury,” she says.
Working with mixed metals such as copper, brass and mainly silver, she also enjoys using gold accents in silver jewellery, but plans to combine unusual and unexpected materials and colours in the future. As of now, she sticks to metal sheets, metal clay, metal tubes, wire, patinas, resin and fused glass with a healthy dose of natural gemstones and semi precious like pearls, turquoise, amethyst and jade Pieces include earrings, necklaces, nose pins, and handcuffs.
“My designs are contemporary with a hint of quirk. You will find modern geometric cuts with tribal detailing and pops of colour,” Vee explains. Available at Timri are her exclusively designed nose pins, named Behiye (Turkish for beautiful). The pins draw inspiration from Ottoman architecture and Iznik pottery and other Turkish ceramics. Hand-crafted in sterling silver, they are stamped with different textures and colours. She picks out a mid-length sterling silver necklace from my her collection, Kolam (Tamil for rangoli), as one of her favourites. Designed to look like kolam patterns with a modern twist, the necklace is textured with uplift details and oxidised. She also recommends the textured and oxidised sterling silver earrings with freshwater pearls with fine silver accents, from her second collection Spartan. Currently retailing out of Timri in Bangalore, Maal Gaadi in Chennai and her Facebook page, she plans to expand to other carefully curated stores by December, while also working on an e-commerce site, to be up by early 2016.
