Rini Rego gives bespoke fashion her uninhibited twist
After a career in hospitality and advertising, Rini Rego launches a unit that caters to the fashion savvy modern woman. “I found a lot of good designers in the city, but they weren’t exactly affordable to the regular working woman,” begins Rego, who also runs the popular eatery, Peppa Zing with her husband.
With no formal training in fashion design, Rego did a short course in pattern making to add a professional aspect to her designs and her uninhibited sense of fashion. “It is important to be original and innovative,” she tells us, about her inspirations, adding, “I go with whatever comes to me when I sit in front of my sketch book.”
Keeping the flow
Rego’s garments lend themselves smoothly to the wearer. “I create clothes that will enable the wearers to express their individuality,” she enthuses. Her women’s line uses ‘flowy fabrics’ that drape easily and complement the Indian body type. Catering to all western silhouettes, Rego’s collections cover dresses, jumpsuits, skirts and blouses. “I like to customise each piece to my clients’ tastes,” she says. Using embellishments like threadwork and sequins, she sometimes adds an ethnic touch because it is “something that comes naturally to her”. Think trendy jumpsuits made from repurposed saris, intact with the zari border and ethnic motifs.
She also prides herself on her smart men’s line that features shirts, blazers, waistcoats and trousers, using a wide range of fabrics from printed silks and linen to tweeds, cottons and blends. “I found that men had far fewer options in this price range and wanted to broaden their options,” she says.
