Having dressed 39 of 44 American Presidents since it first opened in Manhattan in 1818, Brooks Brothers has a power-packed client list of the likes of Fred Astaire, Jacques Chirac, Andy Warhol, Gianni Agnelli and Wynton Marsalis. After Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Chennai, the legendary clothiers come to the city bringing classic tailoring with a modern twist.
The store is distinctly divided into casual and formal wear spaces. “The interiors are tailored to reflect a comfortable, homely setting much like a personal loft, because we want our clients to feel like they are in a familiar space that caters solely to their needs,” says Sumeet Yadav, business head of the design house in India. The homliness is embodied in its mix of cream-coloured walls and wooden accents. Built-in wooden shelves house a subtle mix of apparel and masculine home accessories like books, vintage globes and maps, as well as the odd trunk and chest.
“The space reflects our design aesthetic which I like to call ‘modern classic’ – a sense of playful sophistication,” shares Yadav, referring to their iconic pioneering trends like the button-down collar, the non-iron shirt, and the use of unconventional fabrics like seersuckers and Madras checks. Their smart casual range includes collared tees and chinos, checked cardigans, plaid shorts and premium leather footwear — reflecting quintessential American style.
Formal wear — suits and suiting separates like sport coats, waist coats, trousers, jackets, shirts and ties can take you through from a mid-day job interview to a night time soiree with ease. “While we pride ourselves on pioneering the Ready-To-Wear trend in the industry, our Made-To-Measure service is a true-blue bespoke experience,” Yadav enthuses. 60 try-ons per suit are undertaken by their Italian master craftsman who visits the country every three months.
“We go in to the most minute details like fixing the slight stoop of the right shoulder caused by carrying a briefcase as seen in the accurate placement of the buttons on the front,” explains Yadav of a process that takes up to six weeks. As an example of brand loyalty, he cites the instance of an 80-year-old customer who visited their store. “He bought his first Brooks Brothers suit when he was 20 years old in Manhattan and has worn only our brand since. It was an elevating experience when he walked into our store in Delhi with his son and grandson to get measured,” he beams. A fitting description to a brand that was mentioned in F Scott Fitzerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby and featured in the television series Mad Men.
