This Tamil New Year, take advantage of your day off and go on a picnic. Start climbing
The Eiffel Tower just turned 125. So if you haven’t been to Paris yet, this is the best excuse ever. The tower, which was built in honour of the 100th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, is 324 metres high. Either take the lifts to the top or climb the stairs to the second floor (704 steps) to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city and the Seine. Also, don’t miss the glittering light display the tower puts on at night, for five minutes, every hour on the hour. From 5 euros (Rs. 415) onwards. Details: tour-eiffel.fr

    Doing the rounds
Seemingly, a city worth visiting should have a gigantic Ferris wheel. Las Vegas is the latest to join the bandwagon, with the High Roller Travel-4aFerris wheel going up as part of the LinQ, the Caesars Entertainment shopping and entertainment district. With 28 glass cabins, with a capacity of 40 each, guests will get a 30-minute ride and a fantastic view of the city. From USD 24.95 (Rs1,500) onwards. Details: thelinq.com

    Mapping Japan
If you are travelling to Japan, then don’t depend on their ridiculously-expensive taxis. Instead, download the HyperDia app (available on iTunes and Google play). The Japan train app—which gives you detailed information in English about schedules, stations, journey time and fare—is free for the first 30 days. Details: hyperdia.com
