Tanu Weds Manu

Manoj Sharma (Madhavan), a doctor based in London, gets a rude shock when he discovers his prospective bride, Tanuja Trivedi (Kangana Ranaut), fast asleep when he enters her room. Later, he agrees to the wedding, but Tanu reveals that she has a boyfriend and will never marry him. He duly informs his parents and they decide to meet other girls. But, when their paths cross again, Manu realises that he is falling in love with Tanu. When they meet at a friend’s wedding, it gives Manu another chance to convince her to marry him. Konkona Sen Sharma was initially slated to play the role of Tanuja.

As they flit through college life—from leaking exam question papers to bringing down the walls of their old schools—they go beyond the usual cliches. They have a blast at fests, parties and ragging sessions. However, the reality of their individual futures once they graduate, loom large. Will they be able to cope? Despite a poor opening, the movie was re-released in theatres following public demand and ended up becoming a sleeper hit.

Two NRIs, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol), meet during their respective trips to Switzerland. As they repeatedly bump into each other, much to Simran’s annoyance, Raj manages to win her heart with his carefree ways. They soon fall in love. But Chaudhary Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), Simran’s father, is determined to take his daughter back to India, to fulfil a promise to a friend — that she would marry his son. With no time to bid farewell, Simran leaves without informing Raj. Will this be the end of their romance? Interestingly, Saif Ali Khan was offered the role of Raj, but he turned it down.
