WEaRE mighty glad Sharan Apparao saw the need to stimulate dialogues in arts, crafts and heritage at her gallery over the last year. Be it French embroiderer Jean-Francois Lesageas talk for her Yarn Club or historian Amar Farooqui tracing the passage of Opium from India to China in 19th century British India, these discourses appeal to everyone, from students to experts and curious enthusiasts. This month, Apparao Galleries is working on the theme of 100 years of Indian cinema, and brings in speakers known for packing their presentation with little nuggets of fun facts.
    Studio round-up
The month begins with a talk by film historian Mohan Raman (October 5), who will highlight pioneer exhibitors, early silent films and the talkies right up to Sivaji Ganesan and MG Ramachandranas time. Ramanas talk on Rajnikanth was well received at Madras Week last month, and he promises not to disappoint when he introduces us to the first 50 years of Tamil cinema and its a?movers and shakersa this Saturday. He will showcase a?real movie mogulsa like HM Reddy, whose residence used to be the Palmgrove Hotel, and A V Meiyappan, who has produced over 160 films so far. The heady mix of 15-20 personalities a stars, producers and directors a and studios and books will end on an optimistic note, assures Raman.
    Dance and fashion
The other speaker, veteram film and music reviewer, VAK Ranga Rao (October 18), will present Dance in Cinema, with film clips and insights. Defining the audience in the early years of cinema as educated and refined, Rao says many films then were of sterling quality. He will introduce the audience to names we are no longer familiar with, like Mehmood Alias father, the dancer Mumtaz, as well as current dance icons like Prabhu Deva. Finally, style expert and Vogue regular, Vidya Singh, will highlight the contribution of movie and TV stars to fashion, from Audrey Hepburn and Marlon Brando in Hollywood to Mumtaz and Sonam Kapoor in Bollywood and Vijay in Tamil cinema. On October 25.
