Ziba marries Parsi Gara with Benarasi weaves
From Benarasi weaving experts Ekaya and Parsi Gara revivalist Ashdeen Lilaowala comes a new collection that is a blend of the two age-old techniques. Called Ziba, the line of saris has been inspired by ancient Oriental and Persian hand-embroidery techniques, craft and craftsmanship. Crafted from tanchoi silk in vibrant hues like jewel tone emerald green and burgundy, the saris bear motifs ranging from exotic birds of paradise and peacocks to chrysanthemums, peonies and pinwheels. But unlike in traditional Gara, here the designs are woven, rather than embroidered. “This had never been attempted on a loom. The year long project involved experimenting with various techniques and developing new processes,” explains Palak Shah of Ekaya. The collection will be launched at Cinnamon today .
