The international beauty retail brand Sephora to open doors in the city
The much-awaited opening of the international retail brand Sephora is finally happening in town — after opening in three other cities in the country. Launched in France by Dominique Mandonnaud in 1970 and owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the make-up giant has taken up 2,800 square feet in Express Avenue Mall, and will house more than 80 brands including names like DKNY and Estée Lauder to Chanel and Dior.
“We were waiting for the right space. Once the space was made available to us and it suited the Sephora environment, we decided to open up in Chennai,” says Vivek Bali, Business Director, Sephora (India).
The Bengaluru-based entrepreneur informs us that 23 brands are exclusive to them — like Make Up For Ever, Benefit Cosmetics and Boscia — besides Sephora. What’s more, Sephora is launching around 380 new products like Supreme Body Lotion, Intensive Instant Moisturizer, Head to Toe Hydrator and their new Brow kit, among others. With the store having a grand launch with bands playing every day past week, Vivek says the first 200 customers will get a gift voucher (worth Rs 250 onwards).
Talking about the beauty market, Vivek says, “The market in India has changed over the years.
Women are becoming more independent and aspirational and they want to look glamourous. Maximum women are in workforce now and are earning, and thus they want to spend on themselves.”
However, Vivek feels that they have almost no competition in Chennai as they cater to people with varied budget limits. He adds that one of the biggest trends in make-up is lipstick and Sephora is also promoting that with their three lipstick looks — ombre red, rose red and deep purple. “Our store also provides eight mini flash makeovers, which includes getting the perfect eyes, lips, brow shaping and blush,” says Vivek. He tells us that Sephora hopes to open more stores in the city in the coming years while a new store is scheduled in Mumbai in 2017.
