An unusual setting, a celebrity cast and lots of laughs—there’s a lot going for Vandana Sajnani’s production
A plush Breach Candy apartment forms the setting for this ‘romedy of errors’ where mistaken identities play havoc with different sets of lovers who come to the supposedly-empty flat for a night of fun. An adaptation of the British comedy, Move Over, Mrs Markham, this one is directed by Vandana Sajnani. “Though I first staged Four Play in 2012, I put it aside as I got busy with my TV assignments and shooting for the film Dil Dhadakne Do. Now, I’ve completely updated it—with a new cast, and new scenes and jokes I thought it needed,” says the actor-producer-director, who is bringing down the play this weekend.
Sajnani, who founded Moksh Creations a decade ago, is clear that comedy is her forte. “I began acting under Dinesh Thakur, who was into serious drama. But, though satisfying for a performer, it doesn’t bring in the crowds,” she says. Almost all of her plays also headline stars—she débuted as a director with Rati Agnihotri in Please Divorce Me Darling.
Four Play has some well-known names like TV stars (and husband) Rajesh Khattar, Gaurav Chopraa and Natasha Singh. There’s even an item number by Kashmera Shah. “I don’t want to spend too much time training a cast of all-new actors. I want some who are already comfortable acting. And, of course, the glam quotient does make a difference,” smiles the director, who is excited to be exploring new venues for theatre by staging the play in a mall. Next, she will be taking the play to Bengaluru, before touring the rest of the country. As for future plans, she says a costume drama and a musical are in the pipeline.
