Bring home continental glamour, with lighting and furnishing solutions
With 30,000 square feet of showroom space in V V Puram, Samaavesh is already the one-stop destination for interior design needs, stocking everything from wallpaper and tiles, to bathroom and kitchen fittings. With an extra floor housing Velvet Space and Spotlight Studio, the outlet run by entrepreneur Jyothi Jain expands into home furnishings, lighting, and Italian accents.
“Luxury furniture and lighting have become the need of high-end homes, and our attempt is to fill the gap through Velvet Space and Spotlight,” says Jain, who has spent the last six months sourcing the best Italian brands, along with business partner Vertika Samar, an ex-investment banker who manages the new division. The flagship brand for Velvet Studio is Turri, a furniture manufacturer which blends the classic and contemporary, at the top end of the luxury market. Forty-two other brands are also available, including Moroso for customised sofas and seating, Baxter for leather goods, and Euromobil for upholstered furniture including armchairs, sofas, convertible beds and home accessories. In lighting studio Spotlight, design-centric Italian brand FLOS, known for its focus in innovation and experimentation, takes the lead. “Our research involved assessing brands for their quality and even visiting factories. We’ve gone for brands that are not just Italian in design, but which are also actually made in Italy,” elaborates Samar.
Reaching the second floor which houses the two new studios, the attention to detail is apparent, and it’s more like stepping into a high-end apartment than a showroom. “I wanted to make the space like a home, rather than simply having sofas in one area, beds in another. After all, we’re showcasing a lifestyle rather than selling individual products,” says Samar. We’re struck by a bar unit from Turri which combines a sleek, contemporary counter with a matching cabinet and a pair of retro-inspired bar stools with faux-snakeskin upholstery. The contemporary feeling continues in a children’s room kitted out by Zlaf (part of the Euromobil group) with a green and white colour palette and quirky details like sloping, freestanding shelves for books and a fun touch. On the lighting side, it’s hard to miss a gorgeous piece by FLOS reminiscent of a delicate floating lantern, but instead constructed from aluminum, glass and stainless steel. Designed by Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, it hangs from the ceiling and can be adjusted to provide diffuse lighting. Rs. 5,000 upwards (Spotlight) and Rs. 50,000 upwards (Velvet).
