Designer Ritika Arya on her Montage Fashion House’s makeover and the newest brands
Grand chandeliers juxtaposed against rustic white and brick walls housing collections of up to 20 designers, including her own, Ritika Aryan Jain’s Montage Fashion House, which has been redone to repair damages caused by the floods, is bigger and better. “Not only the space but even our scope has expanded to include accessories and western wear as well,” says Jain when we visit the five-year-old Montage Fashion House in Nungambakkam.
Talking about one of the new designers who are retailing only out of her store in Chennai, she says Lakme Fashion Week designer Ritika Sachdev’s earrings are sported regularly by celebrities like Deepika Padukone. “Then there is Azga, the men’s accessory brand from Jaipur, with hand-crafted cufflinks, lapel pins and pocket squares,” says the 29-year-old designer. While some names like Kolkata-based Vrajbhoomi have contributed in the form of footwear and clothing, others like Duet Factory have printed scarves.
Her own Spring/Summer collection is a departure from her previous one, which had more to do with sequins. While the style spells femininity and the designs are contemporary, the focus of this collection is garments which one can wear throughout the day. “This time, it’s all about lace, cut-work and embroidery in breathable fabrics like georgette and nets and chiffons — lots of whites, some blacks and some rust,” says the designer. When we ask her about her favourite piece, she is quick to pick a net cape in lace with embroidery. “A silk vest top and champagne coloured dhotis with an updo is all you need,” she cheerful signs off, adding that the store will be officially relaunched towards the end of the month.
