Anna Nagar has a new organic store—stocking fresh vegetables, matka dahi, forest homey and more. Owned by E Harish and G Shridhar, Go Organic is small, but well-stocked. The builders-turned-healthy living advocates are enthusiastic about the variety they offer—right from the 15 kinds of rice they sell. Among the traditional ones are Rajamudi and HMT (“a Maharashtrian farmer named it after the famous HMT watches,” quips Shridhar). Their cold-pressed sesame, coconut and groundnut oil, made in their manufacturing unit in Chittor, is a specialty.
The duo, who opened this 700 sq ft store a month ago, aims to provide a one-stop halt for produce sourced directly from farmers in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra. In fact, “we personally visit farms, before and after the harvest, to ensure the authenticity of the produce,” says the 53-year-old Shridhar. Just this week, he visited a dairy farm near Vedanthagal with local breeds of cows like irupakar. It will join the list of six farms from where their products are sourced. One can also find familiar names like Organic India, Organic Tattva and other brands — together amounting to about 300 products in the store, including health mixes, face packs and treats like ragi ladoo. They have no plans to introduce meat but recently acquired 80 cents of land near Red Hills, to start an organic garden.
When we are about to leave we notice, near the cash counter, a list of farmers they source products from, “all for the sake of transparency,” explains the 34-year-old Harish. “We even organise farm visits, at minimum charges, to dispel doubts that arise in the customers’ mind,” assures Shridhar.
