Actress Sara Loren on working in a new industry and women-centric films

It’s hard to believe that this sexy actress and model was once a tomboy. ‘‘I had very short hair, lived in jeans and T-shirts, fought with boys and didn’t know anything about make up. I never liked having my pictures taken and would only click pictures of my family,’’ begins Sara Loren, who hails from Pakistan and changed her name from Mona Lizza Hussain for the stage. As expected, the ‘Loren’ is inspired by the Hollywood legend and was recommended by a numerologist. Today, the 29-year-old wants to be in front of the camera. After doing a few Urdu serials, Loren was one of the first to move to Bollywood, with Kajraare in 2010. While her last project, Murder 3 with Randeep Hooda and Aditi Rao Hydari, bombed at the box office, she is upbeat about her upcoming projects—Barkhaa, Ishq Click and Fraud Saiyaan. ‘‘In Barkhaa, I play a middle class girl from Himachal, who becomes a bar dancer,” says the Mumbai girl. In the romantic film, Ishq Click, she plays a star who is in love with a photographer, and in Fraud Saiyaan, she will be seen with Arshad Warsi, playing a tough character who cusses.
After five years in the industry, Loren has learnt that patience is all one needs. ‘‘Bollywood is not easy, especially when you’re an outsider. As actors, we are the most scared bunch. We’re so conscious about everything and are always in this race to out do the other,’’ she confesses.
Barkhaa is scheduled to release on March 27

Inspiration: I grew up watching women-centric films like Umrao Jaan and Pakeezah. I think women can show more emotion.
Foodie: I used to binge on double cheese pizzas at one point of time. I love biryanis, bhel puri and dosa. But I follow all this with green tea.
Shop unlimited: I like Masaba and Manish Malhotra. I love shopping in Dubai.
