    We get talking to Pondicherry’s finest ice-cream makers on their hand made gelato for the month

    Pondicherry is becoming our favourite destination for homemade gelato. With the new GMT having set up its station on Beach Road and Pondy’s best pick, Gelato Factory boasting a dozen chains in the city, we are spoilt for choice. Read up on the flavours of the season.

    Naturellement Cafe
    Naturellement offers homemade marmalade and preserves, and in the last six months, added gelato to their menu. Made of fresh fruit pulp, their strawberry with yoghurt gelato and stracciatella (gelato with whole milk, chocolate chips, natural vanilla extract and bay leaf), are the usual favourites. On the vegan menu, their eggless gelato are made with thickening agents like carob (natural substitute for chocolate) and guarana extract. Rs 95 onwards. Details: 0413 2622034

    The Promenade
    Promenade’s coffee and cinnamon gelato scoops are a big hit. Their other new offerings include vanilla, chocolate, pistachio and coconut. “Our gelato is a blend of egg yolk and organic flavours. But for vegans we have the option of homemade sorbets like tamarind, coconut, lime and ginger or orange,” says chef Prabhu.
    Their coffee gelato is made with naturally ground coffee beans from Coorg. Rs 190 for

    GMT, Beach Road
    Gelateria Montecatini Terme is a new addition to the French Quarter. Started in May, on Beach road, the little station set up by Master Andrea Menchini, who hails from Montecatini Terme in Italy is famous for its vitamin ice creams. Their specialty is the ACE Gelato scoop made of carrot, lemon and orange. “These are rich in anti oxidants,” says the master. Also try their Gustare ice-cream, which comes in orange and lemon flavours. Rs 40 onwards. Details: 8220657570

    Gelato Factory Auroville
    Gelato Factory’s chocolate and coconut ice cream is a huge draw. Adding to their range of natural fruit-based gelato (strawberry, mango, lychee) and the three chocolate-based gelato, Francisco, the master and owner of the enterprise is experimenting with hand crafted wine ice cream, which sees a homemade wine blended with a milk base. “The wine is absolutely non alcoholic,” he insists.  Rs 100 onwards.
