From the red carpet to the boardroom, these actors can teach entrepreneurs a thing or two about big ideas
Sarah Michelle Gellar
With no ‘cruel intentions’ this time, Gellar co-founded a culinary lifestyle brand, Foodstirs last September. This portal aims to engage children with do-it-yourself kits that help them bake Shamrock cookies and cake pops, among other recipes. It was while scouting for a baking mix in a supermarket that the idea of starting the platform occurred to the US-based actress, whose current net worth is $15 million. The 38-year-old, who will be seen next in the American comedy series Those Who Can’t, is all set to launch a book along the same lines and aims to set up stores too.
The Louisiana-born actress brings some Southern girl sass to her clothing, accessories and home goods line, Draper James. Launched in May last year, and just two months into its inception, the 39-year-old bagged an investment of $10 million for the line. Lending her voice to the animated movie, Sing, currently, the Academy nominee—who admitted that her grandparents are the inspiration behind the brand’s ethos—sports her own creations on most of her outings. Look out for Witherspoon’s new Draper James video series, where she speaks on topics like ‘A southern guide to movie quotes’.
Last year, the actor from the 24 series married Erin Chiamulion, his girlfriend since five years. What brought them together was their mutual love for yoga, sand and surf, which also became the basis of their lifestyle brand portal, Electric and Rose. Up for purchase are athletic wear — from board shorts to leggings — for both men and women. Spotted on stars like Charlize Theron and Demi Lovato, the brand is making waves already. Balfour, whose current net worth is $4 million, is playing an important role in Lou Diamond Phillips’ upcoming film Tao of Surfing.
Paltrow is taking her role of a business woman very seriously. Goop was launched in 2008 as a newsletter and soon expanded into an e-commerce portal with celebrities like Lena Dunham pledging their loyalty to it. It has its own organic skincare line, which the 43-year-old launched just last week on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Started with the intention of sharing recipes and thoughts, the leggy lass’ current net worth is around $140 million and she will soon be seen in Captain America: Civil War.
Alba launched The Honest Company in 2011, an eco-friendly line of household and baby products, after she developed a rash upon using a toxic detergent. The US-born actress, who will soon be seen in the horror movie The Veil, has come far— from the cover of Forbes last year to launching her own cosmetic line. Plus her company is valued at $1 billion now. But this year started on a controversial note as the company was slapped with a lawsuit, accusing it of using synthetic materials and offering ineffective sunscreens.
