Gilly’s, a chic new restobar that’s easy on the pocket

Smack in the middle of Koramangala’s food hub sits the trendy Gilly’s Restobar. Those of us familiar with the area knew it to be a  humble darshini (just six months ago to be exact), serving divine South Indian coffee. And so, with the lingering taste of that coffee on our palates, we ventured across town to  check out their new offerings and a very different kind of beverage.

Greeting you as you enter the premises is a super sleek, modish bar serving unusual concoctions that we simply had to try. Grunge meets class in the indoor seating area where we decided to settle down, promptly get to work and order our drinks.

    Taking the plunge
Embracing our adventurous side, we asked for the raw mango and pepper mojito, peach and vanilla mojito and the Eye Of The Tiger. While the mojitos were pleasant, they didn’t taste as wild and novel as we expected. The Eye Of The Tiger though, was like getting lost in a chocoholic dream. A must-try for every chocolate lover, it’s a blend of white rum, white chocolate and bitters with a touch of cardamom. Another drink from their specials that’s a definite winner is the Pick Me Up, a delightful mix of brandy, Kahlua, espresso and Amaretto. The comprehensive drinks menu features all the regulars and classic cocktails with draught beer expected to be available shortly.

    Quick bites
The food is predominantly Indian but boasts a line-up of world cuisine with continental, Mediterranean, Chinese, and Tex-Mex favourites. Those with a weakness for wings, should not miss the lethal TexMex wings – a crispy, tangy deep red crust coats a juicy succulent flapper with just the right amount of spice and flavour.

The crispy homemade batter-fried prawns with basil too is a great bar eat as is the vol au vent – thin flaky pastry stuffed with red and green peppers and cheese.

For mains, the lamb chops are a good bet. If you have a hankering for pork or beef, they also do a nice Kerala fried beef dish and a host of pork creations that include favourites like pork spare ribs in chilli soya, honey mustard pork, and roast chilli pork.
