Armed with portable speakers, a tent and a Burberry trench, actor Neil Nitin Mukesh makes a case for camping in style

Don’t write off Neil Nitin Mukesh just yet. Despite a few flops, the actor is back with Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (where he plays Salman Khan’s step brother), and is the brand ambassador of Chennai’s newest fashion event, the Fashion Premier Week. And when he’s not working, this 33-year-old loves to travel. “I’ve loved adventure since childhood, and I’m in a profession that takes me places,” he says.

    A few pointers from him.

    Strap on NITIN MIKESH
“I never leave home without a watch,” says Mukesh, adding, “It can be anything from a Hublot or a Rolex to an iWatch.” We like the Hublot Chrono Perpetual Calendar, that is water resistant up to 30 metres and has 72 hours of power reserve. Approximately Rs 50,00,000 at Helvetica
    Swiss Watch Boutique. Details: 28464095

    Under cover
Sometimes, a sleeping bag just won’t do. That’s when Mukesh relies on the comfort of his Snow Peak Land Breeze tent (Approximately `22,659). “I’d also recommend carrying a burner since you can never be sure of the water,” Mukesh adds, recommending the titanium Snow Peak stove. Approximately Rs 3,830. Details: snowpeak.com
    On the go
Mukesh lists jumping off the ninth floor of a building without a harness (for his film Aa Dekhe Zara) and shooting in the South African wilderness (for Shortcut Romeo) as some of the most exciting things he’s done. And his constant companion between destinations — his Tumi suitcase. We recommend going in for the roomy Tegra suitcase. Approximately Rs 40,000 at the store in UB City, Bengaluru.

    Lace up
While the actor picks Asics for his regular hikes, anything a little more challenging has him reaching for his The North Face hiking shoes.
“They work for any rough terrain — from mud trails to rocky mountains,” he says. Approximately Rs 15,000. Details: thenorthface.com

    Denim updateDiesel pants
“A couple of tees, chinos, some nice shorts, a jacket and a nice pair of jeans is all I need to camp,” says Mukesh. But it might pay to pack something durable, like this pair from Diesel, that also offers a super comfy fit. Approximately Rs 13,500. Details: 30083576

    Looking good
When outdoors, the right pair of sunglasses can make your day that much more effortless. Mukesh relies on his Tom Fords — functional and stylish. Try the retro Dimitry Tortoiseshell sunglasses with grey gradient lens. Approximately Rs 31,000. Details: mrporter.com

    Sound checkMarshall speakers
Like Mukesh, if you never leave home without your music, we suggest avoiding headphones for prolonged listening. Try this pair of portable Marshall Stanmore speakers instead. Rs 15,000.  Details: amazon.in

    UV protect
You don’t need Mukesh to tell you that a good sunscreen is an absolute must on a camping trip. Try the non-greasy, UV-shield Bienfait sunscreen from Lancome, in an SPF 50+. RS 2,532. Details: 011 41677741

    Essentials check
In the unpredictable wild, one must always carry essentials. “Take food like dried/smoked meat, dry fruits and nuts — anything with a long expiry date,” says the actor, who also packs blankets or sleeping bags and his trusty Swiss knife. The Victorinox featured here costs Rs 5,310 at Zimson. Details: 43335000

    The convertible
If you have to face the elements, be sure to carry Burberry’s shower-proof trench. This double-breasted, water-proof coat is handy in any weather condition. And since it comes with a detachable hood, Mukesh says it doubles as a jacket, too. Approximately Rs 1,00,000 at the store in
    Express Avenue. Details: 28464135
