can’t believe we’re almost at the end of another year, with people making plans for the festive season and how they’re going to bring in 2014. There are talks of travel, exotic destinations and big bashes along the coast. Another reason to celebrate this week is Indulge’s sixth anniversary, yet another reminder as to just how quickly time flies. The past year has seen the entry of big brands to Chennai, equally big personalities and great new places to party.
It’s been a busy week so far, with multiple launches as well as a quick visit from Shah Rukh Khan. As the brand ambassador for Hyundai, SRK was here to roll out their five millionth car. Amidst the chaos that ensued, he got to answer a few questions about his long association with the brand, his entry into politics and his portrayal of South Indians in Chennai Express. He masterfully deflected the questions and joked, “The only party I’ve been invited to is my son’s birthday party.” His speech ended with his own ‘Hyundai version’ of the Lungi dance, which he sang for the crowd.
Saturday gave us our dose of fashion with sibling duo Julia and Sita Mahan launching their Midnight Collection at Evolv. The sisters wanted to design a line that was wearable, stylish and one-of-a-kind. Meanwhile, on Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Suede by Mohammed Anaikar was celebrating its first anniversary. The evening saw Chennai’s popular faces showcasing clothes for both men and women. While the women’s line sees lightweight fabrics and flowy designs, the men’s collection takes a bold step forward with sequin trim, leather and suede. Keeping the festivities going and gearing up for the season ahead, was a special night of indulgence at Courtyard by Marriott’s Wine Dinner. The guests, mostly expats, experienced the artistry of perfect wine pairings. The chefs prepared a luxurious four-course meal, paired with a unique selection of wines that kept everyone in high spirits all night long.
Later in the week, it was more fun, food and culinary magic at the Hyatt Regency with chef Gary Mehigan from Masterchef Australia, courtesy the Australian Trade Commission. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a huge fan of the show and real-life Gary exceeded all our expectations. He gave us a quick demo with succulent Mulwarra lamb on the grill, stressing the importance of a ‘zen like sizzle’, flashing his trademark smile all the while. “I just want to pinch his cheeks,” one of the ladies exclaimed. Post the master class, we got to chat with him and find out more about his co-judges on the show, along with a list of his favourite Indian dishes.
