At the 12th edition of the International Yoga Festival, expect lec-dems, contests and a mass sunrise event
Pondicherry’s annual Inter-national Yoga Festival is back, and this time it is bigger. Each year has seen a large number of yoga enthusiasts and practitioners from around the world attending, and the 12th edition promises to be no different. Tourism manager ST Chidambaram informs that this year’s ‘sunrise event’ will be the highlight. “This mass event will see more than 2,000 people performing suryanamskars and other simple asanas on the beach. It will also see a lot of student participation,” he says.
Besides workshops and a yoga competition (for men and women), the festival has special sessions for people with diabetes, asthama and cardio vascular disorders. Also check out yoga for inner peace, women, daily life, relaxation, personality development and stress management. “There will be experts like B K Neelima, from the Brahma Kumaris group, Anand Athreya from Bangalore, Niranjana Moorthy, a regular participant from Bangalore, and Raghav Someshwar from Mumbai, conducting discussions, interactions and talks,” says Chidambaram. “We have a group registered from Hong Kong. We also have participants from Europe, especially France and Germany,” he shares. The Tourism Department has also put together a cultural programme, which includes artistes from Pondicherry, a performance by Bharatnatyam dancer Raghunath Manet and a folk dance by a group from Vandalur. For those feeling peckish, they have stalls offering food cooked with less oil and spices.
