The young choir at the Harmony School Of Music will take you on a global musical soiree
This weekend catch Cadence 2013 – Around the World in 80 Minutes – a musical balanced with theatrics and choir performances featuring tunes from different parts of the world. Sandra Oberoi, the director, tells us she was inspired by Jules Verne’s novel, Around the World in 80 Days.
The back story
The plot follows three siblings, Sarah (Aryehi Bhushan), Sam (Yohaan Verghese Joseph) and Sally (Tiara Oberoi), who are home alone on Christmas Eve, looking for ways to entertain themselves. They find an old magic book and discover exciting Christmas traditions from different countries. The whole tableau then comes alive with music, drama and dance. The songs are all Christmas selections. “Some are solos but mostly they are sung in four-part harmony,” says Oberoi. Two opera guest singers from the USA – Pamela Hinchman and Harrah Freidlander will be handling vocal parts.
There is also an African percussionist and flamenco dancers from Spain. Look out for a mix of Western classical, reggae, blues, aboriginal, oriental and even Indian music backed by the String Ensemble, the Harmony Handbell Choir as well as the Harmony Band.
